Volunteering at the Houston CDI Show
by Kirsten Shine
USDF’s Region 9 hosted their first CDI show in Houston on the last weekend in April. Kirstin and Kyra Shine traveled to Houston to volunteer at the show. The Event was huge with over five rings running continuously! The Shines were ring stewards for ring four and were able to watch some wonderful tests in levels two and four. The competitors were lovely and the horses wonderful. The judge (judging from her improvised judges stand, a Ford F-150) took her time with each entrant and gave detailed comments on the new tests. This feedback was appreciated by the recipients, but did put the ring behind from 15 to 30 minutes late. Most of the competitors understood and were very patient even with the delay of their show times.
The Show management was simply gracious and made the Shines feel very welcomed and appreciated. Drinks, t-shirts and food were readily provided to the volunteers, and even with the large amount of activity going on at the huge show, they all took the time to say “thank-you.” After the work in ring four was complete, there was still time to catch some of the upper level competitions and appreciate all the hard work that went into producing such wonderful tests! Everyone agreed that Region 9 was due for a CDI show and looking forward to even more competitors in the next one. This event is well worth going to volunteer or even just to watch the incredible competition.
