SHOW EMERGENCY ACCIDENT PLAN

San Antonio Spring Dressage I & II

 

Injury to a person during show hours – The following procedures will be followed:

  1. Do not move the patient.
  2. Contact the EMT hired by the competition.  The Show EMT provides the quickest response to a medical emergency occurring on the show grounds during show hours.  The EMT is Terry Aikman.  He is stationed in the show office and can be contacted by walkie-talkie or by Show Office phone (210 698-1140).  Show personnel carrying a walkie-talkie that can contact the EMT include the following:
    1. Show Manager – Ed Lavallee
    2. Technical Delegate – Susan Howard
    3. Secretary – Jan Colley

EVERY GATEKEEPER:

If the accident occurs in a competition or designated warm-up area, it is the Gatekeeper’s responsibility to immediately contact the EMT and halt all activity in the immediate area.

  1. The EMT will contact the Show Manager and the Technical Delegate about the emergency.
  2. The EMT will evaluate the patient and determine the patient’s medical status.  If warranted, a 911 call will be made from the show office using a landline so that the emergency medical services have the correct location.  Exhibitors are asked not to make 911 calls using their cell phones.  There is poor cellular service inside the facility.

 Directions:  From San Antonio – I 10 West toward El Paso.  Exit #551 Boerne Stage Road/Leon Springs.  Turn left on Boerne Stage Road.  Go Approx. 3 miles.  Turn right on Scenic Loop Road.  Entry to San Antonio Rose Palace will be on the left.

  1. The Show Manager will designate show personnel to do the following tasks:
    1. Make an announcement asking exhibitors to clear the appropriate area
    2. Open or move fencing for ambulance access.
    3. Keep spectators out of the way.
    4. Keep road clear so ambulance can get through without hurting anyone else.
    5. Go to the front entrance to meet the ambulance and ask them to turn off their siren and lights and escort them to the scene of the accident.  (Ambulance sirens and lights could spook horses and cause additional accidents)
  2. The Technical Delegate and medical personnel will complete the USEF accident/injury report form.
  3. If during show hours, a horse gets loose in a competition arena or designated warm-up area, the Gatekeeper will notify nearby riders and/or handlers to immediately halt their horses, dismount and quietly leave the area until the loose horse is captured.  If the rider/handler is unable to capture the loose horse due to injury, the gatekeeper will ask a competent horseperson familiar with the horse to capture and confine it.
  4. If during the show hours, a horse is injured in a competition arena or designated warm-up area, the Gatekeeper will notify the Show Manager.  The Show Manager or rider/owner will evaluate the situation to determine if the Show Veterinarian should be called to treat the horse.

Exit from the Rose palace onto Boerne Stage Road and go back to I10.  At I-10, go south (towards San Antonio) until you get to 1604.  At 1604, go East.  Take is past 281 to Nacogdoches Road Exit.

Exit Nacogdoches Road and travel North about 1.5 miles. Cross over Cibolo Creek and a set of railroad tracks. Turn left on Marbach Lane and we are the first driveway on the left.  18675 Marbach Lane.

To Retama Equine Hospital:  Call First! 210-651-6375

Exit from the Rose palace onto Boerne Stage Road and go back to I10.  At I-10, go south(towards San Antonio) until you get to 1604.  At 1604, go East.  Take is past 281 to I-35.  Head North (towards Austin) on I-35.  Take exit # 174A.  Turn left (under the highway) on Evans Road.  Head north on Evans Road from approximately 1.2 miles.  The hospital is located on your left.  17555 Old Evans Road, Selma Texas 78154

To the University Hospital:  Emergency Center 210-358-2133  4502 Medical Drive, San Antonio

Exit from the Rose palace onto Boerne Stage Road and go back to I10.  At I-10, go south(towards San Antonio) past 1604 to Fredericksburg Road Exit.  Take Fredericksburg Road to Wurzbach Road.  Turn right onto Wuezbach Rd.  Turn left on Medical Drive.  End at 4502 Medical Drive, University Hospital
